Week 3 – Copyright and Contracts.

This week we read  much detail about copyrights. What actually is copyrights and how does it works in the creative media field. As the article explains two types of copyrights; works and subject matters other than works. Both of them have equal importance and complete the range of work from literary to films to sound recording. It is explained in the article that texts and scripts can be copyright while ideas cannot be. Anyone can use the idea in their own way. It also says that who actually owns a copyright can vary from an individual to an organization and what are the boundaries in which a copyright holder can and cannot use his work after it being copyrighted.

A couple of years ago copyrights were generally considered as that if someone’s  copyright his/her work it makes his own work to be as locked and at the same time the users of copyrighted materials use to consider  them as not to be used work whereas now its all reversed as explained by this comic strip in an excellent way.

Once anything is, copyrighted it become the property of the owner of the copyright whether he is an individual or an organization. Anyone who wants to use a copyrighted work can use it fairly at a limited level. The diagram below explains the fine line between copyrights and their fair usage.

Once a work is copyrighted and someone wants to fairly use it you need to know what permission culture is. Creative common are working hand in hand with copyrights for making the thing available for future use by people in an easy and accessible way.

Week 2 – Your Income & Your Art

During this week we have learned that there are a number of career pathways in the creative media industry. Throughout the career no one will stick to just a single area of industry to earn money rather there is a mix of sources adapted to maximize the skill and money as well. Thus commonly people say that earning and learning primarily depend on student aptitude and the line that he chooses.

Choosing a career is an important aspect of one’s life and there are a lot of factors to see while doing it. Some energy and time has to be given in selecting a career. Income is considered as one of the most important parameters.

Working in the media industry is normally considered as a low income career. It is a common notion that people in the art industry, work for low pay which is a result of ever increasing competition in the industry. Thus, for excelling in art industry one has to take up the projects with different tactics to make them a hit. This basic model depicts some driving forces and essential capabilities in the media industry to increase revenue.

Keeping this in mind there will be many options when I will pass out from which I would be able to gain income from my creative projects ranging from working from art studios to my own art house to gaining sponsorships. Initially I aim to get hold of a job in any of the good art studios here in Australia and worldwide. In Australia I will be finding jobs in some of the major art studios in Australia like Flying Fox Studio, Brand X studio, in the spotlight. Afterwards will be focusing on major studios worldwide like Madhouse, Nick and Pixar. I have some intentions of opening my own art studio if I get that opportunity to capitalize my dream.

Week 1 – How Are We The Same

We are going to start this week  CIU111 unit where we are going to learn the ways in which people in media industry share some characteristics with each others. They share various traits and more importantly, are described in the same manner as being ”creative” dealing with unique and new media every time. We studied a research study conducted by Rosalind Gill in detail, where  Gill described different ways in which new media workers are broadly depicted by explaining 10 main characteristics of new media life.

Entrepreneurs are generally considered as starting a new startup company, whether in the original it’s a habit, an attitude and a state of mind that impels one to come up with something new by creating an opportunity within another opportunity. Thus, companies are focusing on people who have innovation in their blood by encouraging entrepreneurialism within their company and have termed it: Intrapreneurs are the persons who rather than creating their own company use their entrepreneurial skill with their existing company.

In new media, life work is mostly project based which results in a cyclical cash inflow. To minimize any up and down of the income what normally people do is that they have to undertake several projects at the same time. This results in parallel working on two or more projects at the same time. Media workers are not able to concentrate on one project solely that’s why getting laid off is becoming very common.

It is a common notion that people in new media work for low pay which is a result of ever increasing competition in the industry. Getting a very successful idea is not that easy and out of the box projects are very rare. Thus, for one’s survival one has to take up the projects with the  low paybacks and at times have to work unpaid for hours.

Another shared characteristic of new media workers is that they have to work very long hours. This time, even increases if you are freelancing or works in micro enterprises having fewer facilities. Gill emphasis that one should have a work-life balance in order to have good quality work at managing time is a skill that has to be developed to have a happy relax work life.

Keeping up with knowledge and enhancing your skill set on a continuous basis is a core demand of the new media industry. As this industry in advancing at a great pace by having newer and newer software packages thus there is an increasing need of keeping yourself abreast of new knowledge.New media workers are mostly highly educated and have a high focus on ‘learning by doing’. This is because of their urge to keep up with the ever-changing new media industry.

The informal working environment is one of the most common features of the creative industry as they are deemed to help people in becoming more and more creative at their creative product.This informality results in a highly networked creative person with lots and lots for opportunities created by their contacts.

By this week’s lecture I have come to know about the shared attributes of creative media industry and this will help me understand the culture of my workplace once I am in the job market.
